Brief Summary of Duties for Heritage Museum Guides
• The Noon -2:00 PM shift should get the museum keys from the Senior Center
• Check if there is any mail for the museum and bring it downstairs.
• Put the “Open” sign out or ask custodian for assistance
• Sign into Guide Book (2 places)
• Turn on all lights (both galleries)
• Turn on both Visitor computers (there is a button in the back)
• Turn on Information Desk Computer
• Check to see if there are any telephone messages. If so, listen to them and take notes.
• Welcome Visitors
Ask to sign the museum register
Offer to give them a short introductory tour
Let them know there are videos for viewing
Let them know (politely and without pressure) that there is a voluntary donation box
Inquire if they might have any items they might like to donate
Let them know that there are books and calendars for sale
At end of their visit, invite them to fill out a “Comment Card” and paste on the City of Boston map
Invite them to take bookmarks and postcards
• If the Telephone rings, it’s ok to answer it. Usually, callers just want to know when the museum is open or where it is. After 3 rings, the answering system will give them that information anyway. The callers can also leave a message if they want additional information.
• The 2-4PM shift should shut all lights, all computers, and the TV, check the rear door to ensure its locked, and bring the keys back to the Senior Center.
